Story Overview
A forgotten hero desperate for work. A lost love reincarnated in a shapeshifting alien. What could possibly go wrong?
An outer arm of the Milky Way, 2420. Cliff Crane is just trying to get by with nothing. Four hundred years after saving the human race during the Vampire Wars, the legendary werewolf finds himself far from Earth with only the ghost of his ex-lover as company. Taking a lucrative job safeguarding a shipment of indentured alien shapeshifters, he believes life will get better… until one passenger takes the form of his high school crush.
Torn between the admonitions of the apparition in his head and the alluring temptation before his eyes, Cliff struggles to resist the lookalike girl’s pleas to set her free. But if he gives in, he’ll invoke the wrath of a powerful oligarch. And then there’ll be nowhere in the universe he can hide.
Will Cliff’s yearning to redo his past destroy his future?
Excerpt
“That’s a terrible idea,” blurted Claire.
Clifford gritted his teeth. He’d hoped to order his thoughts about Emily’s proposal before addressing the subject with Claire, but as soon as Emily was gone Claire had popped back into his mind before he’d had a chance to systematically weigh the pros and cons.
“Since when do you ever systematically weigh the pros and cons?” she asked, reading his thoughts.
“Dammit, Claire…”
“Okay, that was judgmental, I admit. I’m sorry. However, it looks like you’ve already decided to do it.”
“I didn’t say, yes. I only committed to thinking about it. I mean, I’m not sure even she knows whether it’s legal or not. Did you find out anything?”
“Well…” He felt the mental equivalent of a sigh. “…yeah, it’s legal…everything she’s done so far is, including initiating contact with you, but …”
“I’ve got about ten days. I won’t make a commitment until I’ve gathered as much information as I can.”
“Yeah, you say that. Look, Clifford, I know you think this will provide you some sort of…closure, but…Jesus, all that stuff happened when you were in high school! Really, how long ago was that? Four hundred years?”
“You never went to high school, Claire. Believe me, that shit stays with you.”
